Who Wants To Study Beyonce: The University Course?
Jay-Z's got one. Now Beyonce's got one too. What is it?
A university course, silly!
With Sociology students at Georgetown University in DC already studying a subject on Hova himself; Rutgers University in New Jersey has followed suit with "Politicizing Beyonce", examining American race, gender and sexual politics through the point of view of Beyonce's music videos and lyrics.
Come again?
"This isn't a course about Beyonce's political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama's inauguration weekend," says Kevin Allred, the Rutgers doctoral student and lecturer who'll be administering the course.
"She certainly pushes boundaries. While other artists are simply releasing music, she's creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona."
Topics up for discussion during the semester include whether her half-naked body is either empowered or stereotypical.
The subject also looks at the impact the likes of Billie Holliday, Nina Simone and Lady Gaga have had on society.
Would you take "Politicizing Beyonce" if it was offered at your university?
